After multiple extractions in Denver, CO
After the Removal of Multiple Teeth
The removal of multiple teeth requires special care during healing. Please follow these instructions closely to minimize complications and support recovery.
Bleeding
A small amount of bleeding is normal following surgery.
- If bleeding occurs, place a gauze pad directly over the bleeding socket and apply firm biting pressure for 30 minutes.
- If bleeding continues, a moistened tea bag may be used for another 30 minutes.
- Keep calm, avoid exercise, limit talking, and keep your head elevated.
- Use ice packs for swelling when bleeding is a concern.
- If bleeding persists, call our office for instructions.
If you were provided with a denture:
- Do not remove the denture.
- Some oozing around the edges of the denture is expected.
Swelling
Swelling is normal after multiple extractions.
- Apply ice packs externally on the side of the face where surgery was performed for the first 24 hours only.
- Use ice in 20-minute intervals: 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off.
- Do not leave ice in place continuously.
After the first 24 hours:
- Moist heat may be used to help reduce swelling and bruising.
- Do not apply heat if an infection is present.
Pain and Medications
- For mild discomfort, use over-the-counter pain relievers as directed.
- For severe pain, take the prescribed medication exactly as instructed.
If pain does not begin to improve after the first few days or increases after 3–4 days, call our office.
If antibiotics have been prescribed, complete the full course as directed, even if symptoms improve.
Fluids and Diet
- Drink plenty of fluids, at least six to eight glasses per day.
- Restrict your diet to liquids and soft foods that are comfortable to eat.
- As healing progresses, gradually advance your diet as tolerated.
Please avoid:
- Nuts
- Chips
- Seeds
- Popcorn
These foods can interfere with healing.
Oral Care
- Do not rinse your mouth while active bleeding is present.
- After meals, gently rinse with warm saltwater to flush out food debris (½ teaspoon of salt in a glass of lukewarm water).
Denture Care
If an immediate denture was placed at the time of surgery:
- Wear the denture continuously for the first 48 hours, including during sleep.
- After the first 48 hours, remove the denture at night and while napping from that point forward.
Normal Post-Operative Conditions
Because multiple teeth are removed and the bone may be shaped prior to denture placement, the following conditions are normal:
- Swelling that peaks within two days
- Bruising or discoloration around the eyes
- Sore throat due to swelling of nearby muscles
- Dry or cracked corners of the mouth (keep lips moisturized with ointment such as petroleum jelly)
- Slight elevation in temperature following surgery (a normal inflammatory response)
If a fever persists, notify the office.
Denture Adjustments
If immediate dentures have been placed, sore spots may develop. In most cases, your dentist will see you within 24–72 hours to make necessary adjustments. Prompt adjustment is important. Failure to address sore spots may lead to painful denture sores and delayed healing.
