After exposure of an impacted tooth in Denver, CO
After Exposure of an Impacted Tooth
Proper care after surgery is important for healing and comfort. Please follow these instructions carefully.
Bleeding
Some bleeding or redness in the saliva is normal for one to two days after surgery. If excessive bleeding occurs and your mouth begins to fill rapidly with blood, it can often be controlled by placing a gauze pad directly over the surgical site and biting down firmly for 30-minute intervals.
Do not frequently change the gauze, as this can dislodge the developing blood clot. A moistened tea bag may be used in place of gauze if needed. Do not apply ice to the area if bleeding is a concern. If bleeding continues despite these measures, please call the office for further instructions.
Swelling
Swelling is a normal part of the healing process. To help minimize swelling, apply an ice pack, plastic bag, or towel filled with ice to the cheek near the surgical area. Use ice in 20-minute intervals: 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off. Do not leave ice in place continuously.
Diet
Drink plenty of fluids following surgery. Avoid hot foods and hot liquids while you are still numb. Soft foods and liquids are recommended on the day of surgery. You may return to a normal diet as soon as possible unless otherwise directed.
Pain
Begin taking pain medication as soon as you feel the local anesthetic wearing off. For moderate discomfort, over-the-counter pain relievers may be sufficient. For more severe pain, take the prescribed medication exactly as directed.
Oral Hygiene
Keeping your mouth clean is essential for proper healing. Beginning the day after surgery, clean your mouth thoroughly after each meal. Brush your teeth gently as best you can, avoiding the surgical area initially.
Rinse with warm salt water (½ teaspoon of salt in one cup of warm water) after all meals. Continue rinsing regularly until healing is complete.
Remember: A clean wound heals better and faster.
Activity
Limit physical activity immediately following surgery. If you attempt to exercise and experience throbbing or bleeding, stop the activity. Keep in mind that reduced food intake after surgery may cause weakness. If you feel lightheaded, discontinue exercise and rest.
